Moda su Pellicola: Quando la moglie è in vacanza.

Today I'll talk about a true cult movie, in which there's one of the most famous scenes ever. The Seven Year Itch (1955) is a comedy directed by Billy Wilder and the main character is Marilyn Monroe. In this film we can watch the famous wind's scene which blows through the underground's grate and raises the actress' skirt. We are talking about unforgettable frames, the staff had to film this scene in a studio because of the big crowd that prevented to film it outside (in the middle of the night!).

Let's start with outfits: we're in the middle of the 50s decade, so style is thought for a pin-up and curvy woman. Marilyn is a 50s icon, or better, she influenced a lot both fashion and beauty trends of those years. Platinum hair, cat eyes, red lips and curves. Even though, in my personal opinion, Marilyn was actually quite thin, she lost and picked weight through the years due to her weakness, but pin-up beauty was even curvier. But of course, she was very charming and stirring.

Here there are two outfits which are perfect for actress' curves: a halter neckline to keep the back nude, the waist-line is emphazised and a straight skirts that follows her curves. They are both white to struggle against the hot summer (as it is said in the movie), the first one is in white cotton with polka dots and the second one has a glamourous sparkle. All the accossories, which are gloves, earrings and shoes, are matched in white.

This THE dress of this movie. I had the chace to see a copy in an exhibit dedicated to Marilyn in Ferragamo museum (Florence) about a year and a half ago. It's a pleated white halter dress, made by fluffy fabrics that show actress' legs when the underground grate blows. Despite what I thought, I found out that this dress was made with synthetic fabrics (I thought it was silk): this choice was made to give lightness and fluffiness. Marilyn also wears big botton white earrings and gorgeous white high-heel Salvatore Ferragamo sandals (which we can spot in different scenes).

At last, in this scene Marilyn wears a light pink matching shirt and trousers. Personally speaking, pink is not my colour at all, but the oufit is very pretty anyway. The shirt has a very charming v-neckline, quite long but tight, three-quarter sleeves, and a tight belt to underline the waist-line. Trousers seem to be high-waisted (they are partially covered by the shirt) and they are quite tight.

This is just a selection of the outfits worn by Marilyn in this movie, but I think they are also the more significant to describe the 50s style, emphasizing femininity curves. As always, to me it's a pity not having lived in those years!
